Exclusive Interview: Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows Talks the Revolver Golden Gods
Avenged Sevenfold dominated the 2011 Revolver Golden Gods last month, both onstage and in the fan-voted awards, so it makes sense that they should grace the cover of the new Golden Gods issue of the magazine, which is currently on newsstands and available online here. The band members took home the Best Vocalist, Best Guitarists, and Album of the Year trophies, and their six-song headlining set was the talk of the evening, climaxing in collaborations with Duff McKagan, of Loaded, Velvet Revolver, and Guns N’ Roses fame, on GN’R's “It’s So Easy,” and Vinnie Paul, of Hellyeah and Pantera, on the latter band’s “Mouth for War.” That crushing performance will be broadcast as part of VH1 Classic’s hour-long Revolver Golden Gods special, which features highlights from the three-hour show and premieres on Saturday, May 28 at 10 P.M. ET (watch the trailer here). Here, A7X frontman M. Shadows looks back at the momentous night.
REVOLVER What did you think of the Golden Gods?
M. SHADOWS Oh, great. It was really nice seeing all our friends. We didn’t get to necessarily hang out and enjoy it as much as I wanted to because we were in between tours. I would’ve liked to go and relax and hang out and watch the show and not have to leave at 6 in the morning [the next day] for tour. But it was really a blast. We had a great time. It was really nice to see a lot of our fans there, and we saw friends from other bands. We had a really great time.

Vinnie told us he had second thoughts about playing “Mouth for War.” Did he mention that to you guys?
Yeah, you know, he hit me up and said, “Hey, man, maybe we should just play ‘Walk.’” He was like, “I don’t know, I haven’t played ‘Mouth for War’ in a long time.” And I was like, “Really? Let’s just try it. Let’s do it.” And he was like, “Man, I don’t know.” So we kind of let him get up there [at sound check] and feel it out, and I think he felt a little uncomfortable jumping on Arin’s drum set not knowing what it was all going to be about. But he worked it out, and he started playing through it, and we jumped in with him and played it. And we ran it after, again, after rehearsals, and it was all great. But I think he was just a little nervous about going up there and playing a song he hasn’t played since, like Ozzfest, the Ozzfest they did out in Dallas. But it was all good.

What did you think of the performance of the song?
I thought it was great. I thought it was fun, you know. We go out there every night, and we expect to be on point, on top of our game. I think the only thing was, it was a little weird not playing on our gear because everything was on tour. It was out in Louisiana [where the first date of the Welcome to the Family tour kicked off]. So that’s always scary, coming into a situation where you’re dealing with a new guitar rack and new guitars and weird drums, and all sorts of stuff, this and that. It turned out great, it was a fun time, and hopefully it translates when it’s on VH1 Classic.

Were there any musicians you got to hang out with at the show that stand out?
I wasn’t there for very long because I always warm up before singing. And I was in our hotel room making sure my vocals were going to be OK. So when I got there, the one thing that shocked me was that Robert Trujillo and Lars [Ulrich of Metallica], they came into our room and started watching the Lakers game with us. They popped open a beer, and that was one of the coolest things ever. Just to be able to chill with the guys, Metallica, being like, “Hey, what’s up? What are you guys doing?” and being all buddy-buddy. We could just chill, watch the Lakers game. It was a really surreal and cool experience because we just love those guys and it was really nice to do that.

You guys didn’t get to soundcheck with Duff. How do you think the performance went?
It was great. I think we were more nervous than him. Because we were like, “We haven’t tried it with you yet.” And it was bizarre that we didn’t put anything together. And we kept asking him, and he was like, “Yeah, I know how to play it.” And we were like, “Yeah, we know how to play it, too, but it’d be good if we could at least run through it once.” And then he’s like, “Oh, I’ll sing the vocals with you, too.” And we were like, “All right.” So all that stuff was on the fly. And I thought it went great. I was really surprised as well. Obviously, he knew how to play the song perfectly, but I was more worried about us, not him, playing it with him. But I thought it was great, he’s a great guy, and it went really smoothly. I wish everything could go that easily.

Video: Avenged Sevenfold stop show in Rockford, IL
Now, I know they have done this before, but it never gets old to show what a fantastic band this and how much they care for their fans. Props to Matt for keeping an eye on all of us while he's on stage!
During a show in Rockford, IL last April 27th, Matt noticed a girl was hurt and instantly stopped the show to make sure security got her out of the audience and she was okay. He then offered her to come and stand on stage with them, but from what I've seen, she didn't do that.
Next, the guys want to start playing again and mess up wonderfully because no one seems to know where to start, which leads to a bunch of good laughs. Check out a fan video of this moment below:

Avenged Sevenfold fan Arron reviews his first A7X show in Oklahoma City
Avenged Sevenfold fan Arron was kind enough to share his experience of his first ever Avenged Sevenfold show in Oklahoma City on May 13th. Read it below!
No text has been edited.
So driving to Oklahoma City to watch Avenged Sevenfold was exciting but actually seeing them play in person was a feeling i cannot explain. Sitting through Bullet For My Valentine and Three Days Grace was awesome, but it came time for Avenged Sevenfold and the crowd couldn't have been more pumped and ready. As the stage was getting set up for A7X everyone started chanting "Sevenfold" and the anticipation couldn't have been any greater. As the guy hangs himself from the rafters, the organ in "Nightmare" starts, as Synyster Gates walks out first.Thats when i went nuts, because finally seeing the man thats the reason i started playing guitar, my favorite guitarist, and my hero right there in front of me was a feeling i didn't think i would ever experience.
as they go through their setlist they get to "Welcome To The Family" and since the Oklahoma City Thunder were playing that night, Shadows gave us a little update on the game. He said "It's a little chilly tonight, but theres 2 reasons thats okay. One Avenged Sevenfolds here to heat it up, and 2 the Thunder are beating the Grizzlies right now." as the WHOLE crowd went crazy, he continues to say "It's only Halftime, so if they lose, dont kill me, but im thinking their gunna win this game tonight" they wound up losing. after that, M.Shadows says "Who all are here seeing us for the first time" and half the crowd, including me, raised their hands and screamed, and M. Shadows says "Where have you been all of our life" he says "Well for all of you newcomers, welcome to our goddamn fucked up family". as the crowd cheers on, they start playing Welcome To The Family, followed by Almost Easy, and Buried Alive, then they played "So Far Away".
I had seen pictures before but WOW. the amount of lighters and cellphones being held up in respect for Jimmy was crazy. One of my favorite parts of the show is when they ended with Unholy Confessions. They stopped just before the end of the song, and M. Shadows says "This is my favorite part of the whole fucking show. i gotta see how big Oklahoma can get their circle pits" and tells Syn to start a riff, and they start playing Crossroads for about two or three minutes, which i wasn't expecting that at all, but as they went back into Unholy Confessions the pyro was AMAZING. the whole crowd was going in one big circle, fire everywhere, and when it ended, fireworks went off everywhere, and everyone was screaming.
As A7X go backstage, everyone chants as normal "One More Song", so when the guys came back onstage, they brought a beautiful piano with them, that i'd also seen in picture. As one light on the stage lights up the piano, Fiction starts playing. The most beautiful thing i've ever seen. When i mentioned earlier that there were alot of lighters and cellphones, it was nothing compared to when Fiction started playing. The whole Zoo Amphitheatre was lit up completely, and this was at 10 at night. As they ended their encore, and the whole show with Save Me, the crowd went WILD in the pits, and when the song was over everyone cheered, clapped, screamed, and chanted "Sevenfold", showing that the whole crowd was there for one thing and one thing only. Avenged Sevenfold.
For this being my first concert, and graduation present, it was the greatest thing that could have ever happened to me. It was by far the greatest day in my life. I'm so glad i finally got to see the men that made me who i am today. Thank You Avenged Sevenfold. Thank You Jimmy.

M. Shadows Interview at UltimateGuitar.Com
Being the singer in a successful band has its perks. M. Shadows is a mad game player and when he had a chance to spend time with Treyarch, the company that makes the Call Of Duty: Black Ops games, he jumped on it. He was introduced to Treyarch as a fan and recently Avenged Sevenfold cemented that relationship by writing a new and original song for the Zombies series. "Not Ready To Die" was written specifically for the new map and is according to Shadows "More soundtrackish than a typical Avenged Sevenfold song." If you can find the song in the game—prompted by a woman’s voice saying "Sounds like music to kill zombies to,"—the song’s eerie pipe organ intro swells in the background and to the accompaniment of Avenged Sevenfold, you can now destroy, pulverize, and wipe the world clean of the walking undead.
It’s a mixture of what we grew up listening to music-wise when we were playing video games like Transylvania-ish/devil-is meets Avenged Sevenfold. We wrote it a little more storytelling but we feel that our kids and our fans—I don’t wanna call ‘em kinds because they’re not all kids—are gonna enjoy it as well as being able to work in the game. So I think it does a little of both and it’s pretty cool.
Can you talk a little bit about how you first got involved with Activision? Had you heard Arin play in Confide, which was his band? Getting back to the awards show, Mike Portnoy won the Drum Workshop Best Drummer Award, which was presented by Vinnie Paul. Are you still on good terms with Mike?
M. Shadows is really proud of the new track and he took time recently to talk about it. Shadows and his bandmates also swept the April 21st Revolver Golden God Awards by taking home four trophies for Best Album, Best Vocalist, Best Drummer, and Best Guitarists. We spoke to the singer about the awards and what it meant to be recognized by peers and how life with new drummer Arin Ilejay is working out.
UG: Avenged Sevenfold have an unreleased song for the new Call of the Dead: Black Ops Zombies game?
M. Shadows: We recorded a brand new song that comes out May 3 and it’s called “Not Ready To Die” and no one’s heard it yet and we wrote it specifically for Zombies. The song is a new thread in the map so if you find the song, you play to that song. So you’re gonna be killing Zombies while you hear that song. What we worked on with the new song, “Not Ready To Die” as a Zombies map is just scary as shit. You get in there and you have all these zombies that are trying to kill you and it’s actually freaky if you’re playing it at night by yourself; it’s a scary game. I love it; I think it’s fun and it’s great.
Can you describe the song a bit?
"We’re really looking forward to getting into the studio with Arin Ilejay."
My relationship with Activision goes way back from doing Guitar Hero-type stuff. But I think this whole thing with Call of Duty started with a relationship I had with Treyarch; the company that makes Call of Duty and the Black Ops series. So, yeah, I was a huge fan of that franchise so I got an introduction from a couple different people and I was such a fan of it that I emailed the president of Treyarch and he said, “Sure, c’mon on down.” I went in there and saw how it was all done and we started talking about, “Hey, maybe we should do something in the future” and this whole thing came about so that was kinda cool.
The first song you did for Call of Duty was “Welcome to the Family.” How did that happen?
We were comin’ out with a new record and at that point we didn’t actually have a relationship with Treyarch. Black Ops was done and it was coming out and there was a company called Machinima that is like the biggest video gaming website where they make videos and Top 5 Killcams of the Week and they do all these crazy things. And we actually had a relationship with Machinima who were doing promotion for Black Ops and so were like, “Hey, why don’t we team up and make a video with our new song. At the same time we can promote Black Ops while they promote our song because we’re both fans of what we heard of each other.”
So you were a serious game player?
We all played the Modern Warfare series, the World at War series, and then we were gonna get into Black Ops so it felt like a good fit. Not only are we into it but we know a lot of our fans are into it so it was a nice way to introduce the song. So at that point with “Welcome to the Family,” it was more of a Machinima thing. It was later on that we got to meet the people at Treyarch and actually work on new music for new maps.
“Welcome to the Family” was actually a perfect song to be connected to the Black Ops game because the tag line of the track was “You can’t win this fight.” It had the whole war/killing thing built right in.
Totally; it did all fit. It was good for us because we ended up not doing a video for that song. So people kind of put those two things together and still go that video and that montage as like the video from that song, which is cool.
So “Not Ready to Die” is the first song with your new drummer, Arin Ilejay? And you’ve also been touring with Arin for a while now?
He’s a shredder; he’s awesome. He’s been playing all the parts great. I think one thing about this new song is we’re really looking forward to getting into the studio with him and seeing how we gel with him and see what he brings to the table as far as writing goes. That was a great experience for us to be able to do that (“Not Ready to Die”) just so we don’t go into the next record completely blind; how he is in the studio.
It’s been a learning experience for the band?
It’s the first song that he drums on and he’s been killin’ it on the road—and he’s a really nice guy. He’s one of the nicest guys in the world, which is more than we could ever ask for so we’re really excited about it.
What were you looking for in a drummer to replace The Rev?
What we were looking for was someone that was young and someone that was unknown. We wanted to give someone a chance that wasn’t completely jaded; we didn’t want them to feel it was a job. We wanted him to be a fan of the band and a fan of music and wanting to be out on the road and view this as their dream like all of us. One thing we didn’t want was some older session guy or some guy that just saw it as a gig—‘cause it’s not a gig, it’s like our life. It’s what we want to do for a long time. So basically we wanted a nice, young person that could obviously have the chops to play everything that’s been laid down before but also we wanted them to be able to have their own style. It’s gonna take years for our fans and for people to understand what Arin’s style is and we’re still figuring it out ourselves. But he needed to have his own style and be his own drummer but at the same time be able to play everything (Mike) Portnoy and The Rev laid down. So far he’s got two of those down and now we need to work on bringing out his style and what he can bring to the music.
"What we worked on with the new song, “Not Ready To Die” as a Zombies map is just scary as sh-t."
No; I didn’t know who he was. We talked to our producer—Mike Elizondo—and we talked to Mike Fasano who was Jimmy’s in-studio drum tech and we said, “Hey, do you guys have anyone you could suggest?” And they both sent somebody down and we went and jammed with ‘em both and they were both great and Arin came in and just killed it. That was the first time I’d ever heard of him or seen him or met him and he came in and he was super skinny and small and he hits the drums like a beast. And it was like, “Whoa.” We were all kind of smiling like, “Wow, this kid’s got every chop down. Not only has he played everything right but he’s also transcribed everything right.” Which is good to us because you have to have an ear—you have to be able to hear what people are doing. He played everything Portnoy and Jimmy were playing to a tee. And we were like, “Wow.” So we had a couple more sessions with him and he was just the perfect fit right off the bat—he just really blew us away and impressed us.
You must have been blown away by winning the recent Revolver Golden God Award for the Rockstar Energy Best Vocalist.
It was amazing. I’m not a big guy on awards but I was up there with Bruce Dickinson and Corey Taylor and I said, “C’mon!” We know that Bruce is a fucking legend and Corey is still a legend-in-training (laughs) and it’s one of those things that’s very flattering. Do I think I’m the best vocalist? No, absolutely not! But it was nice the fans voted and I’m very grateful for it. It was a really nice moment—it was really nice to get it from Sebastian Bach ‘cause that guy to me is one of the greatest singers of all time. He could sing anything and always have loved his voice. And so, it was really nice and it was really humbling and gratifying at the same time.
Avenged Sevenfold jammed with Vinnie Paul on “Mouth of War.” How did that feel?
Oh, that was sick—that was the highlight of my fuckin’ night. It was probably the highlight of my year. I walked off stage and we were both like high off it. We were like, “Yeah, dude.” We went straight to shots and drank together all night and me and Vinnie were talking about it and talked about Dime and The Rev. We got off stage and had a fuckin’ blast and he’s such a great drummer and it gelled really nicely. It was nice to see him up there again just rockin’ out to an old Pantera tune.
You also jammed with Duff on “It’s So Easy.”
It was so cool, man—it was just thrown together. We’d been planning on doing it for a long time and he just couldn’t make it to a rehearsal at the same time that we could make it to rehearsal. We ended up being on tour and then him playing a show in LA the night before the Revolver Awards, so we never practiced it. We just kept talking to one another—“Are you sure we got this?” And Duff was like, “Hey, man, I know how to play it; everything will be OK.” We’re like “Fuck, dude, yeah, I’m sure you know how to play it but we’re just makin’ sure.” We can’t just walk up there on TV and play a song for the first time and he seemed to think it was gonna be fine and it was. It was awesome; we played it really well and it gelled and we had a good time with it. But I was definitely very scared about that performance over anything else that night.
Guns were an influence on Avenged back in the day?
Oh, yeah; they were my favorite band growing up. And they probably still are—there are a couple bands that I’ve really gotten into in the last few years like Pink Floyd and some of the classics. But Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion I and II are two of my favorite records of all time.
Do you have any feelings about the Chinese Democracy record?
There are great songs there and Axl is a great singer; he’s an amazing singer. It’s hard because a lot of times it’s that feeling a band gives you when you know they’re a band and you know what it’s about. And there’s so much drama that goes around that camp. I’ve met Bumblefoot and a couple of the guys in that band and they’re great guys and great players—it’s just really hard to play in that shadow of what Guns N’ Roses was. And I think that kind of takes you away from when you’re listening to a record and what it’s all about. What made Dark Side of the Moon so great is some of the mystique and where it was coming from and just the authenticity of it. And that’s what kinda sucks about the new Guns N’ Roses—it’s really hard to put your finger on it but it’s not the same thing. I think for all of us it would be really nice if they could just get it together and do some stuff but that’s probably never gonna happen.
"We’re on good terms with Mike Portnoy — it just got a little out of hand for a while there with us."
Yeah, we’re on good terms—it just got a little out of hand for a while there with us. And the way he runs his camp is a little different than we run ours. It couldn’t co-exist in that way and I’m really happy for him—I’m happy on a bunch of different levels. The Rev wrote those parts, Mike elaborated on them, and the record did really well. To me that’s a success all the way around. Mike helped us out in a time of need and he really stuck true to what Jimmy’s parts were, which we were really thankful for that. ‘Cause he could have come in there and been like, “No, I’m not playing that—why don’t we do this?” So he did exactly what Jimmy had written down and what we wanted him to do and kudos to him for doin’ that.
Avenged won four Revolver awards—more than anybody else.
It was nice that we got to go in there and basically sweep those awards—it was really cool. And I’m sure Mike appreciates it as well. I didn’t get to talk to him afterwards but I know Zack did and they exchanged some nice words. So it was good to see that he won that award.
Synyster and Zack won the Epiphone Best Guitarists Award—it must be cool playing with two talented guitar players like those guys.
Yeah, they’re great and especially Brian’s knowledge of music and the stuff he comes up with and he plays; it’s really awesome. And Zack is just such a raw player—he’s just all feel and he reminds me of a young James Hetfield where it’s rhythm-oriented but it’s solid as fuck and it’s great. It is great getting to play with them and knowing that I can sing anything to them and they can play it. You know what I mean? Like I can say, “Hey, you know, can you play faster here or do this?” and Brian can just play it. Most people don’t ever get to deal with that and I guess I’m very lucky to be able to write songs with those guys and be able to do that and not have to work on parts really. I can just kinda sing ‘em out and have ‘em go at it.
Your fourth award at the Revolver show was for the Affliction Album of the Year for Nightmare. Mike Inez and Jerry Cantrell presented that award. Winning this kind of award must have felt really empowering after the loss of The Rev and going through that kind of horror.
Oh, that was great. Those are our peers and they’re still idols to us—all those people that we went up there with and it’s kinda like we still feel like a young band being in that situation. I know there was a lot of other young bands there that are more where we came from like the Warped Tour and late Ozzfest crowd. So it’s really great to be up there and be able to hang out and jam with our idols and receive awards and have them have to recognize us in a way. When you’re growing up that’s all you want is to just be able to hang out in the same room and jam with these guys and talk to them and now we’re getting awards and hanging out and drinking with some of our favorite musicians. It’s really surreal and great and I think we’re taking that evolution of the band very nicely into whatever it’s gonna be next. But we’re really excited about it and we’re still looking forward to it.

There is a YouTube link to the video, I'm probably not supposed to post this, but I know how frustrating it is when things are unavailable for your country so here and ssssh! ;)
Zacky Vengeance had a few words to share (via Twitter) regarding the release of the video:
I don't want to hear any shit because the servers crashed. This video means too much to me so take it or leave it.
Bless him. I cannot imagine how hard it must be for him and the rest of the guys to watch their own video. So, if you have issues watching the video or if your country is unable to view the video, please send me an email so it can be passed on to the right people.

'So Far Away' music video release
According to The Pulse Of Radio, AVENGED SEVENFOLD will premiere the music video for its latest single, "So Far Away", on Tuesday (May 10) via MTV, MTV2 and MTV.com. The clip is described as a "raw and emotional" tribute to late AVENGED drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who died in December 2009 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. The track itself, which appears on the band's current "Nightmare" album, is said in a press statement to be a "very personal goodbye" to Sullivan.
The "So Far Away" video was directed by Wayne Isham, who has previously helmed videos for such established artists as METALLICA, MÖTLEY CRÜE, SIMPLE PLAN, PANTERA, 'N SYNC, SHANIA TWAIN, GODSMACK, BRITNEY SPEARS, LEONA LEWIS, PINK FLOYD, SHERYL CROW, JOSS STONE, MADONNA, AVRIL LAVIGNE, DEF LEPPARD and BON JOVI.
Following Sullivan's death, the band recruited his favorite drummer, ex-DREAM THEATER member Mike Portnoy, to record the drum tracks for "Nightmare" and tour with the band through 2010. The group then found a new touring drummer in 2011 named Arin Ilejay. Guitarist Synyster Gates talked about the newest member of AVENGED. "We always kind of thought it would be cool, you know, with Jimmy's death if it could breathe new life and a new career for somebody young, which is the case," he told The Pulse Of Radio. "We have a new drummer, his name's Arin Ilejay, and he's unbelievable. He's 22 years old, and he's just a sweet, young, awesome kid. He shreds, he's amazing, and it's really made us feel certainly very excited to give him this opportunity."
AVENGED SEVENFOLD's fifth album, "Nightmare", has been certified gold for sales of more than half a million copies.
The band is currently on its "Welcome To The Family" headlining U.S. tour, which brings it to Orlando, Florida on Monday night (May 9) and will wrap up on May 21 at Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio.
AVENGED SEVENFOLD has also contributed a brand new track called "Not Ready To Die" to the newest content pack for Call Of Duty: Black Ops, the wildly successful seventh installment in the Call Of Duty video game series. The pack, called Black Ops Escalation, is ready for download worldwide through the Xbox Live network and features four new multiplayer maps.
"Not Ready To Die" is the first AVENGED studio track to feature Ilejay on drums.
Synyster Gates: Gitaris Terbaik Versi Metalsucks

New Zacky Vengeance '6661' guitar set for late summer release!
**** UPDATE***** See it HERE~
Zacky has been road testing a few variants of his original Schecter 6661 on the band’s recent South American tour and now currently on their Welcome to the Family shows.
The guitar shown in case (see pictures) is the prototype that is 90% faithful to what we hope will be in stores world-wide by late Summer.
As with all of Zacky’s guitars, it will be armed with dual Seymour Duncan JB humbuckers and feature a TonePros bridge system.
Other cool specs include distressed chrome hardware, ZV ‘switch blade’ 12th fret inlay, and custom pickup rings and output jack (more on these to come).
The finish will be Satin Black and will be available in BOTH Left-hand and Righty versions, at Zacky’s insistence.Live Photos: Albany, NY

Revolver Magazine speaks with M Shadows
Revolver Magazine recently spoke with M Shadows about the recording of Avenged Sevenfold's new song 'Not Ready to Die' and more. Below you will find an excerpt of the interview. To read the full interview, go here.
When was “Not Ready to Die” written?
We had a little break between the Nightmare After Christmas tour and the Welcome to the Family tour. So it was written, like, in four days that we had off. So it was pretty rushed. It was pretty incredible, though, because we really wanted to do it. It was written, like, a month or two ago.
What’s the song about?
Oh, well, the song is about the game. There’s a full backstory to what [the makers of Call of Duty] been doing for years with their “Zombies” series. I’m a big fan of the game, I play it all the time, so I got caught up in the story. They sent me over the full storyline, so I made sure it was going along the lines of the zombie story. So that’s what it’s about.
